Mrs. Gwen Curtice - MS 7th grade math, advanced Math 8 & PSIA 2-8

Gwen PhotoMy name is Gwen Curtice, and I am teaching 7th grade math for 6th graders, advanced /8th grade math for 7th graders as well as coaching PSIA 2-8.  I have 47 years teaching experience of which 32 were in elementary,11 were in public middle school math, and I am beginning my fifth year at The Honor Roll School. My undergraduate degree is from Texas Tech University, and I earned my master’s degree in elementary education from the University of Houston at Clear Lake. While in middle school,  I taught and coached competition math at the Gifted and Talented Academy at Quail Valley Middle School in FBISD.

In 2015, my students represented Texas at the National Math Counts Competition in Boston and earned 7th place in the nation.  Then in 2016 they took first place in Washington, D.C. at the National Math Counts Competition. In 1970, 1974 and 1977 I was honored to be Teacher of the Year in Deer Park ISD and Fort Bend ISD.

My philosophy is simple: all math is connected. Introducing a logical progression of topics, I use hands-on activities combined with daily practice and problem solving of real world associations to obtain long-term understanding. I emphasize accuracy before speed. All students can learn to love math when they have the correct “tool kit” of strategies.

I have lived in Sugar Land for 39 years with my husband, Kolbe, and our labrador, Saxon.  Our daughter, Mallory,  is a graduate of Texas Christian University and lives and works in Fort Worth.
